Mark and Maeve find an abandoned baby and learn that their actions can affect the lives of others. Maeve takes revenge on Freddie, her faithless lover, with behavior that shocks Mark. Meanwhile, Mark holds his infant son for the first time.

Faced with mounting debts and bills, Mark's widow, Jo, applies for a job. Freddie embarks on another affair, this time with a teenager. Maeve and Mark meet an elderly couple and help them solve a long-ago crime.

While attending a wedding, Mark advises a nervous bride, and Maeve falls in love. Freddie and Jo become friends, and when Freddie falls asleep at her flat, Mark believes the worst. Maeve briefly imagines a life she will never have.

Maeve promises Mark that she will learn the truth about Freddie and Jo's relationship. After finding the car that struck and killed her, she goes in search of the driver. Mark has an unexpected chance to spend time with his daughter, and Maeve makes peace.
