She has a strong background in theater, including off-Broadway performances and extensive work in regional theaters across the U.S. On television, Gibney is known for roles such as Dr. Leah Brahms on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and Commander (later Captain) Erika Benteen on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." She was considered for several key roles in the Star Trek franchise, including Captain Kathryn Janeway and Seven of Nine on "Star Trek: Voyager." Beyond Star Trek, Gibney has appeared in many TV series and films, including a critically praised role in the 2015 horror film "We Are Still Here."
